Why is salt put on the rim when sake is drunk from square wooden cups? | |||||

This custom is said to date
from ancient times when there was no side dish for sake and salt was used
to bring out the taste. It may also derive from the Japanese custom of
using salt to drive out evil spirits. When drinking sake this way, taste
the salt with a fingertip and drink from a corner of the cup with no salt.
Anyway, it should not be recommended to use salt as that salt may come
into sake in the wooden cup. ![]() |
